It's hard to put into words what the past week has felt like. Football fans have the Superbowl, Designers have Fashion Week, and Artists? We have Art Basel.
My accessory for the week was a Pentax 1000, always locked and loaded. I've been drawn to film a lot this year, because it feels more like pausing time rather than just taking a picture. Here are just a fraction of the moments that made the past week so magical...
December 2nd: Wyn317
I kicked of the festivities by attending the 10 year anniversary party for Wyn317, a gallery designed to spotlight Miami’s unique urban landscape, amplifying up-and-coming and established local artists.
Have you ever looked at a piece of art, and your jaw immediately dropped? That's how I felt looking at this Karl Lagerfeld and his cat cubism piece.
Another memorable work was this anatomical painting that had two different layers - flesh and bone. Each layer was only fully visible with 3-D glasses... talk about dimension.
"The Kiss III" by INSANE 51
It's always so fun seeing everyone's personal style, and their take on current fashion trends. Fluffy hats and denim are IN baby!
I met some other dope film photographers this night, got to nerd out about developing, and I learned you process black and white and color film at different temperatures. Maybe I'll start doing it myself in 2024...
December 6th + 7th: MUSES
Wednesday and Thursday I was at MUSES, an eCommerce and art installation pop up. Although though it was a work event, it was fun to be there and host the experience.
...Let's just say, I'm not worried about a painting robot coming for my job anytime soon.
December 8th: 444 Studios
One of my favorite creative spaces in Miami is 444 Studios. I mean, how could you not love a venue that has a shark head eating a disco ball?
The meaning of 444 - alignment and guidance has always been very present for me in this space.
There was a portrait artist doing complementary drawings of attendees. One thing I noticed was how fast, yet realistic they were drawing each person's features. Truly an art.
No party is complete without the DJs who make us all dance. The first song of the night? 'Everybody' by Nicki and Uzi, on the same day it dropped.
Made some new friends! The ladies were showing out. I always gravitate towards people who are vibing high.
There was even a spot to paint outside. Standing there h*gh watching this unfold, I realized I've found the Electric Studios of Miami. Life is crazy.
December 9th: Faena Art
Miami Art Week would not have been complete without a visit to Faena. The giant maze, 'Spaces of Influence' definitely lived up to the hype. Y'all we're right... it was a better experience at night.
'Night at the Museum' core....
I was using daytime film at night and paid the price for it on these shots. Lesson learned but I was very happy to get to meet up with some of Homegrown Network while they were in town!
We ended the night at a gallery on Lincoln Road, with a mix of painting and sculpture art, and of course, dancing.
December 10th: Wynwood Adventures
By Sunday, I was ready for a calm day exploring on my own. I went over to Wynwood to check out some of the pop up exhibits and activations.
This exhibit was representing New York artists, but if you follow graff culture, you could probably tell that from the mailbox. Thank god for getting one of the last spots on here, because that's where I was born.
I went to a sticker bomber event at the Museum of Graffiti, and had no idea what to expect, other than giving out all the SOULS I had left.
There were 2 cars completely tagged. Well... almost complete. I had one of those "I love being an artist" moment, standing there in awe watching people come up and leave their mark.
Street art is a very male dominated space, and there are a lot of moments when I'm one of few women in the room. I don't shy away from these experiences, and have made some true friends through being a part of the culture.
People were even helping me reach spots I couldn't! Real af
Reflecting...
This year, I was excited to just be there for Art Week and get to share the message of the SOULS. I'm right in the beginning stages of a new series, and I'm glad I didn't pressure myself to submit work that wasn't my absolute best.
Getting to meet people who wake up every day knowing they are meant to be an artist... that's what it's all about. I'm grateful for all of those moments where I felt inspired, joyful, and authentically myself. Until next year!
